Energy Efficiency
Significant gains in energy efficiency are imperative for a sustainable energy future. The smart grid can effectively engage customers in managing energy use for efficiencies often as high as 15%. The smart grid also reduces peak demand providing significant congestion reduction on electrical networks. Connecting management of electric load, energy storage, and renewable generation offers further potential for improvements in energy efficiency throughout the electrical network.
Renewable Energy
The smart grid can help achieve the goal of 20% to 30% renewables by 2020 in many areas around the world. Integrated management of renewable energy resources with energy storage and load curtailment resources improves reliability and capital productivity for a higher return on investments for renewables.
Climate Change
Sustained annual investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency, carbon capture and carbon storage at a level of 0.44% of GDP ($500 billion in 2020), are need to mitigate climate change and address the challenge of global warming according to the United Nations Environment Programme. The smart grid can drive energy efficiency improvements and support growth in renewable energy.
Clean Energy Economy
The transformation to a low-carbon economy would result in sustainable economic growth and a green recovery, according to a report by the Center for American Progress. An investment of $100 billion in the smart grid and 5 other energy efficiency and renewable energy strategies would create 2 million jobs concludes the report.
Energy Independence
The smart grid can be an important facet of a country’s strategy for energy independence. It transforms the local electrical network to power 21st-century digital economies.
